I'm Alex and today we're going to learn about hammocks in the jungle.
Lucy:
Well, that's good, because today we're reviewing Havoc in the hammock.
Alex:
Awesome, and who wrote it?
Lucy:

And tell us a little bit more about the book.
Lucy:
The illustrators are Liz and Kate Pope, and it's published by Raycraft Books in New York, new York.
Alex:
And what's the genre of the book?
Lucy:
It's a children's picture book.
Alex:
And why don't you tell the listeners how we found out about this book?
Lucy:
The author's husband knows you from karate.
Alex:
Yes, he's our sensei, isn't he?
Lucy:
Yes.
Alex:
And sensei Jim is amazing and I posted something and he's like my wife is a writer, she has a book, so we decided to do this book and it seems like it's a pretty cool book, so we're going to put it on the podcast, right?
Lucy:

When you look at the front cover, the name of the book is Havoc in the hammock. What do you think Havoc means? I have no clue. Well, that's one of your new words that you're going to have to figure out. Hopefully, we can figure out by the end of the podcast. Yep, what or who was the main character in the book?
Lucy:
The turtle is the main character.
Alex:
Does the turtle have a name?
Lucy:
No, it doesn't really say the name.
Alex:
He's just turtle Yep. So, lucy, why don't you give the listeners a little bit of a summary of this crazy book?
Lucy:
All the turtle wants is rest. There are a bunch of bugs and animals causing all these crazy things to happen. Finally, at the end, the turtle finds a quiet place to rest. Then something even crazier happens.
Alex:
Can you tell me?
Lucy:
It'll split at the ending.
Alex:
Okay, so then I don't want to know.
Lucy:
Yeah, you have to read the book.
Alex:
You gotta read the book.
Lucy:
Read the book later, after field talking.
Alex:
Okay. So, Lucy, some of the synonyms for havoc are damaged, chaos and mayhem. Now that you hear those words, does havoc make more sense in the description?
Lucy:
Yes, more animals kept coming and coming and coming. They were annoying the turtle.
Alex:
It's kind of like during Christmas when you're opening up your presents, right.
Lucy:
Yeah, and you don't let me go downstairs right away.
Alex:
I know I'm so mean. The main thing is that this poor turtle is just wanting a little bit of a rest and everybody wants to annoy him. It's kind of like mommy when we kind of annoy her, don't you think? A?
Lucy:
little.
Alex:
I know that's kind of silly, so why don't you tell us about the illustrations and the pictures in the book?
Lucy:
I love the colors of the drawings. I particularly like, I particularly like, I particularly like the bunnies, the flowers and the squirrels.
Alex:
What do bunnies make? What sound. And what do squirrels make? Same sound, huh.
Lucy:
I don't know. I don't know.
Alex:
What do flowers make? They don't make sense. But yeah, the pictures are really great in this and I've said this in other episodes. You know the drawings of these illustrations. Like I'm just looking at it, it's not like an Oliver Jeffers book, yep, but it's more like a very hungry caterpillar book, Don't you think?
Lucy:
Yes.
Alex:
And I think the illustrator did a great job of making it very kid-friendly. Like the centerfold has the turtle with the grasshoppers and he's in the lake and the turtle is getting annoyed because all he wants to do is just Sleep. Yeah, get some peace and quiet, Kind of like mommy huh.
Lucy:
Yes, and sometimes me.
Alex:
Yeah, because what do we say when you start annoying mommy? What do you don't want to do?
Lucy:
Don't poke the bear If you say that in your house. Comment down below, Please.
Alex:
Yeah, we say don't poke the bear, because we don't want to poke any bears here.
Lucy:
Not me, not you, not mommy.
Alex:
Not me, not you, not mommy. All right, so let's get back to it. So the turtle's problem was he needed rest. Was his problem ever solved?
Lucy:
The problem is not solved by the end of the book.
Alex:
He doesn't get his rest huh.
Lucy:
Nope.
Alex:
All right. Would you recommend this book?
Lucy:
I think kids from three to five years old would like this book, even if they're a little too young to read it to themselves.
Alex:
You think this would be a good book to have it read to you.
Lucy:
Yes, you could just read it to yourself. I think it's kind of like a Christmas carol. It's not a Christmas carol, but it's like a Christmas carol. The rhythm's like a Christmas carol.
Alex:
So the words kind of go in a rhythm. Yes, you're learning a lot about that in music class, huh?
Lucy:
Yes, quarter notes and quarter rests.
Alex:
So it's kind of neat how both books and music kind of work hand in hand.
Lucy:
Yep.
Alex:
Do you get to play an instrument this year?
Lucy:
I think that's an extra. If I don't, then I don't.
Alex:
Okay, talked about who would recommend. Is there anything else you want to say about this book that you liked or didn't like?
Lucy:
Well, this is just a comment about the book. It's not spoiling the ending, though.
Alex:
Okay.
Lucy:
At the end, but like not at the very, very end.
Alex:
Okay.
Lucy:
At first I thought the turtle was gonna go under the thing. Oh yeah, I'm not telling.
Alex:
What the thing is.
Lucy:
Yeah, because I want them to read the book.
Alex:
Of course, is that it.
Lucy:
Yes.
Alex:
You thought the turtle would go under the thing.
Lucy:
The. Thing.
Alex:
Not the thing in the other book that we reviewed in a different episode. So, folks, this is a really great book for a bunch of reasons. I love the fact that it has so many different types of animals and insects. It really kind of brings the outdoors in in a fun way. I love the way the illustrations are kind of, you know, childish, yeah, whimsical, yeah, awesome. I mean, it does have a lot of the hungry caterpillar feel to it, doesn't it?
Lucy:
Yep.
Alex:

He's gonna have a new book that's gonna be out. I can't stress enough to you.
