Lucy:
Hey Dad, what's your favorite art supply?
Alex:
Crayons.
Lucy:
Me too. My favorite art supply is crayons. That's a good thing, because this week we are reviewing that crayons go back to school.
Alex:
Wow, I didn't know that crayons had off for the summer. Who would have thought? I don't know what's your favorite color crayon.
Lucy:
Tealer pink Purple.
Alex:
Tealer pink. How much do you like drawing La, la, la, la, la la. You love it a lot Okay.
Lucy:
But not as much as reading.
Alex:
Not as much as reading. So tell me who wrote the book.
Lucy:
The author is Drew Day-Walt and the illustrator is Olive Deathrose.
Alex:
And what type of genre was it? Is it?
Lucy:
This book is a children's picture book.
Alex:
So if we're talking about crayons, who the heck are the main characters in this crazy book?
Lucy:
Each color crayon is its own character. They have faces and personalities. There are no minor characters. They are all equally important.
Alex:
Wow, and what were the different colors? Do you remember?
Lucy:
Pink, red, black, white peach.
Alex:
Was there a blue?
Lucy:
Yes, there was a blue.
Alex:
All right.
Lucy:
That was short, that got tall and I'm in it.
Alex:
We're gonna talk about that in a minute. Was there an orange?
Lucy:
Yes, there was an orange, and yellow.
Alex:
All right, so did you have any connection with any of the crayons and if so, can you explain?
Lucy:
I felt a connection to white crayon. He likes reading, and so do I.
Alex:
He does. Well, we know you like reading, that's for sure Love. What's your favorite thing? You like to draw?
Lucy:
Um, um, um um animals.
Alex:
You like to draw animals? What kind of animals?
Lucy:
Made up animals. You like orange Made up animals and real animals.
Alex:
Made up animals and real animals. What's a made up animal? What kind of animals? And made up animals that you've drawn?
Lucy:
Um a cat that can talk.
Alex:
Talking cats? Yes, all right, I bet you there's a book about talking cats. Did you have any of the characters that reminded you of other characters in other books?
Lucy:
Well, all these characters were in two previous books. One was called the Day the Crayons Quit and the other was called the Day the Crayons Came Home.
Alex:
So this is a series of books, right? Yep, All right, wait, did you have you read the other books? Yes, I have. Okay, so what were some of the characters like?
Lucy:
Peach Crayon was naked and embarrassed in the first book because he lost his crayon wrapper. In the first book. In this book he doesn't know what to wear to school. Orange and yellow were fighting in the first book. In this book they agree that Jupiter is the best planet because it has both of their colors no-transcript.
Alex:
Were there any other funny parts?
Lucy:
Pink thought blue got taller and that was funny to me cause he did he got taller?
Alex:
Yes, how does crayons get taller? I don't know. Well, I know the time of this podcast. You just started school, yep, and your mom always likes to say you like to take a stretch in the summer? Yes, did you take a stretch this summer?
Lucy:
Yes, I did. I take a stretch every summer.
Alex:
You take a stretch every summer. I don't really take. Well, that's good, and that's why we have to buy you new sneakers every year, right? Yes, we don't know how blue got bigger, but we did.
Lucy:
Maybe Duncan sharpened him.
Alex:
Who's Duncan?
Lucy:
Duncan's the person, that Duncan's the human in the first two books.
Alex:
So do you like to sharpen your crayons, or you just let them go?
Lucy:
If they're like really low, then I would like to.
Alex:
We go through a lot of crayons in this house, don't we? But we do so. Since this is a book series, do you think kids who read the other books would like this book? Would you recommend this book to those kids? Yes, I would.
Lucy:
It's like the other books.
Alex:
So what ages do you think this book is really good for? Do you think this was too old for you or too young for you, or just right?
Lucy:
I think it might have been a little too young for me, but I still like it.
Alex:
You like the classics right. It's like an old friend. Yes, how many times have you read this book?
Lucy:
Twice.
Alex:
That's it, that's it.
Lucy:
It's new.
Alex:
Oh, okay, it is new, I don't know. Let me ask you how do you like school? I love it, so what do you think about having a different teacher?
Lucy:
It feels a little weird.
Alex:
So what were some of the things that you were looking forward to when you were going back to school?
Lucy:
I was really hoping for. I don't know. Actually, I really don't know what I was really hoping.
Alex:
Is there new types of classes that you're able to take now?
Lucy:
Yes, science and computers.
Alex:
Science and computers. What other things do third graders get to do that you couldn't do in second grade?
Lucy:
Second grade and first grade I didn't get to learn multiplication and in second grade I was really looking forward to do multiplication and cursive and division.
Alex:
So you like to do cursive. Do they teach that in school or did you just learn that yourself?
Lucy:
I just taught myself how to do it. I did not learn from somebody, I just learned myself.
Alex:
How did you learn?
Lucy:
I was just writing one day and I just, I just did.
Alex:
Then you go onto YouTube or.
Lucy:
I didn't do any of that. I just started writing.
Alex:
Really, I didn't know that. I thought you were Didn't A YouTube person that learned how to do cursive, and then mommy got you books. All right, science. What are you looking forward to learning in science?
Lucy:
I'm just looking forward to more experiments.
Alex:
Really and science Now-I need to learn from you now. Getting back to the book for a second when do you normally draw? When would you normally use the crayons? Would you use them during class, or would you use them before or after class?
Lucy:
I would use them during class, before class and after class.
Alex:
You like to make pictures all the time, yes, and you like to make cats to talk and anything else that you like to make. Not in particular, nothing in particular Do you normally draw by yourself or with your friends. No, I understand that. I just didn't know if you were at school and you like to draw with your friends, oh okay, I do like to draw with my friends at school, though. Lucy, why don't you tell the listeners how they can get the book if they want to buy it?
Lucy:
They can buy the book at their local children's bookstore or they can go to our show notes where we have a link. My mom's friend, nick, took us to a really great bookstore in Jersey City called Word. He bought me this book and another great one called Poly Diamond in the Magic Book.
